Troubleshooting the SPA122 ATA

How to tell if you have a problem:

  • You may have a problem if you cannot send or receive faxes, you cannot send or receive calls, you cannot hear anything when you listen to the phone (no dial tone), or you have no internet connectivity from a computer connected through the SPA122 ATA.

Troubleshooting with the lights:

  • No lights:

    • If none of the lights on the SPA122 are on, there may be a problem with power getting to the device.

    • Make sure the power adapter is properly plugged into the SPA122.

    • Make sure the power adapter is properly plugged into the power outlet.

  • Internet light is off:

    • If the Internet light is off, then there may be a problem with the connection the SPA122 has to the router, switch, or modem.

    • Make sure the Ethernet cable that connects to the router, switch, or modem is properly plugged into the Internet port (the blue one).

    • Make sure the Ethernet cable that connects to the router, switch, or modem, is properly plugged in.

    • If the Ethernet cable is connected correctly between the SPA122 and the router, switch, or modem it is connected to, then there may be an issue with the router, switch, or modem. See the troubleshooting procedures for those devices.

    • If there is no problem with the router, switch, or modem, then there may be an issue with your provided Internet connection. In this case contact your service provider.

  • Phone 1 / 2 light is off:

    • If one or both of the phone lights are off, then there may be an issue with the phone or the connection from the phone to the SPA122.

    • Make sure the telephone cables are properly connected to the phone and the SPA122.

    • If the phone needs additional power, make sure the power adapter is properly connected to the phone and the power outlet.

    • If you are using a POTS filter between the phone and the SPA122, then make sure the filter is not the issue by connecting the phone directly to the SPA122.

Q: My phone has no dial tone, what can I do?

A: If you have no dial tone, first make sure that the telephone cable is properly plugged into the phone and the SPA122. If the Phone (or other) lights are off see the Troubleshooting with the lights section above.

Q:  Why I can’t send or receive faxes?

A: If you aren’t able to send or receive faxes, first go through troubleshooting the fax machine itself; here is a quick checklist is:

  • Make sure the fax machine is turned on.

  • Make sure the power adapter is plugged into the fax machine and the wall power outlet correctly.

  • Make sure the telephone (RJ-11) or Ethernet (RJ-45) cable is properly connected to the fax machine and the SPA122.

  • Make sure the fax settings are correctly set.

If your fax machine is set up correctly, then check to see if the fax lights (phone or Ethernet depending on how you have you fax machine connected) are on or off. If the fax (or other) lights are off, see the Troubleshooting with the lights section above.

Q: I have connected my computer to the SPA122, but I still can't connect to the Internet. Why is this?

A: First, troubleshoot the computer itself. Launch the network troubleshooter (if in Windows) by right clicking on the network icon located in the bottom right icon tray and selecting “Troubleshoot problems.” This can help pinpoint any issues your computer might have. Also, connecting the computer to a different router (one you know works) can help identify which device is having issues. If the computer can connect properly on another router, then see if any of the lights on the SPA122 are off. If there are lights turned off, see the Troubleshooting with the lights section above.

Q: Why am I getting heavy static, and why are my calls cutting out?

A: If you are hearing static or your calls are cutting out, then you may be using too much of your bandwidth. See if anyone is using internet streaming services (internet radio, youtube, bittorrent, etc.) or are running updates at the time you are experiencing these issues. If you can confirm that it is not a bandwidth issue, then the problem may be with the phone itself, or with your connection. To see if it is the phone, replace the phone with a different one that you know works correctly. In the case that the connection might be the problem, contact your service provider.
