Until PoE, nearly every device needed a power adaptor. Power adaptors are used for devices that do not have internal mechanisms required to distribute the right amount of power to a device. Many devices have specific power adaptor requirements. Using the wrong power adaptor can either ruin a device, or cause it to not power up properly.
