How to use Speed Test

Internet Service Providers (ISP) often sell service packages according to maximum attainable Internet speed. From time to time you may question if you are getting the speed you are paying for. To find out if you are getting the speed you are paying for, you should run a speed test. This should be done while you are hardwired into the network as close to the modem/router as possible. Connections through multiple switches, and longer cables can be the source of problems. If you suspect a problem, you can measure speeds at different locations as an attempt to confirm the presence of a problem. You can also use a speed test to see how much of this speed is lost over your wifi network. There is always some loss, but by doing a speedtest while hardwired, and another on Wi-Fi, you can find out how efficient your wireless router is.

1. In the URL bar, type speedtest.net.

2. You will arive at a page that looks like this but surrounded by advertisements. Select "Begin Test".

3. After a few seconds, speedtest.net will begin to measure how fast your download speed is, as seen below.

4. Next, speedtest.net will begin to measure your upload speed, as seen below.

5. Here speedtest.net gives you all of your speed information.

Now you know how fast your upload and download speeds are.

Testing at various locations and at different times of day may show you patterns which might help you understand any problems you might be having.
