Remote Desktop Services - Introduction

Remote Desktop Services is a program written by Microsoft for the purposes of accessing a Terminal Server using a protocol known as the Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP). The currently released version of this protocol is 8.1, released with Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012. Windows 7, and Windows Server 2008 R2 were released with version 7.0; version 7.1 being added with Service Pack 1. RDP version 8.1 is also available for Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 via additional installation.

Remote Desktop Services, Terminal Services Client, Terminal Server Client, and RDP Client all mean the same thing and are often used interchangeably.

Instead of transporting your files from a remote computer to where you are currently working, it is often more efficient and secure to leave the files and applications in a central facility, and access them from there.

A Terminal Server can host many simultaneous users, and due to efficiencies in design and high performance hardware, often provide the user with an experience the same or better than they are used to with their own desktop.

Factoring in the reliability of this Enterprise class solution, and the security and ease of remote support, it is the ideal solution for many organizations.
