How to set Outlook 2010's Junk E-Mail folder options
Once you properly configure your Spam filter settings and find a balance that works for you, you may never need to look at your "Junk E-mail" - but if you don't, it could build up without limit wasting a huge amount of disk space and putting unnecessary load on your computer's resources.
In an IMAP environment, the "Spam" folder is set to delete any mail older than 7 days. This is a server-wide feature - with POP3 and your own rules, you can choose how long to keep messages in your "Junk E-mail" folder.
This guide assumes you have already set up Outlook 2010 to move your Spam to the "Junk E-mail" folder - if not, read about how to do that first.
To start, right-click on the "Junk E-mail" folder and left-click "Properties"
Select the "AutoArchive" tab and set the desired archive settings. We suggest setting "Archive this folder using these settings". Select a period that represents the longest time you might need to dig an important message that was mis-classed as Spam out of the Junk E-mail folder. One month is the longest value required for most people. Then select the desired action - we recommend "Permanently delete old items". Remember - we are only talking about your Spam / Junk E-mail here - not your Inbox or other important folders.
The effect this will have will be that old Spam / Junk E-mail will be automatically deleted after the period you select, keeping it from piling up and wasting your disk space.
Press "OK" to save your settings.
