Installing UltraVNC

UltraVNC is a remote desktop tool compatible with a wide variety of Windows operating systems. Other versions of VNC (an Open Source project) are available for other operating systems including Linux, Mac OS, etc.

To get started you will need to download a copy of the latest setup program. If you have an account on our system you can download from us here. If you do not have an account on our system (your support rep can provide you with one), go to http://www.ultravnc.com/ and follow the links to download from one of their sourceforge mirrors.

Make sure when you download the file that you save it to a location that you can find it again!

If you download from our site you will be prompted with a dialog like this - simplly click Run to download and start the installation immediately:

IMPORTANT - at minimum select "Clean old VNC registry keys" unless contra-indicated below!

Here's a brief overview of what a few of these key options are used for:

  • Register UltraVNC Server as a system service. This option enables UltraVNC to run automatically on boot-up and allows for remote administration / unattended maintenance. If you want us to support your machine or do work on it for you when you are NOT present, this needs to be checked. In addition to this setting, changes to your office firewall may be required. Those changes are not covered in this document.

  • Start or restart UltraVNC service. This option starts or restarts UltraVNC server immediately. This allows us to continue configuration without waiting for a reboot or manually starting the service. This option should be used with "Register UltraVNC Server as a system service".

  • Clean old VNC registry keys. This option cleans out old VNC registry keys and forces this set up to function like a clean installation. It disables any other versions and passwords which may have been saved previously. You MAY not want to do this if your in-house or other IT support person has VNC already configured for their remote access / admin needs. If you suspect this, you may wish to contact them prior to continuing this installation. If you choose to continue regardless, the worst consequence should be disabling the other persons remote admin access until they edit your configuration or make note of your new password.

Select chosen additional installation tasks and press Next to continue:

IMPORTANT - If you are prompted to confirm allowing Internet access or enabling a port for UltraVNC (5800 & 5900 by default) you should accept / allow the access. YOU MUST ALLOW ACCESS for UltraVNC to connect to other computers.

If you selected "Register UltraVNC Server as a system service" and "Start or restart UltraVNC service" you will likely see any firewall prompts as well as a warning starting to pop-up now - skip the next step (starting the server manually) and jump ahead to this configure the Admin properties.

Otherwise, continue with the next step.

If you did not select "Register UltraVNC Server as a system service" and "Start or restart UltraVNC service" during installation, you must start the UltraVNC Server manually each time you require help.

To start the server manually, find it in the Start menu and click it.

Enter the password and press OK:
