How To Take A Screen Shot

If remote support is not an option and you are encountering errors in any part of your system one of the easiest ways to explain the scenario to customer support is by taking a screen shot or screen capture of the issue. Some very simple keyboard commands perform this function. The primary keyboard key involved is the print screen key. The print screen key or PrtScr is located in the cluster of keys in between the keyboard and the number pad. On conventional keyboards the print screen key is immediately to the right of the F12 key. This key can be used alone or in combination with other keys - here are the options.

  • Print screen  - pressing the key by itself this will take an image of the whole screen, right to the very edge. This can be useful when there are multiple pop ups or errors occuring in more than one part of the screen.

  • Alt print screen - first press and hold the Alt key then press the print screen key once. By pressing these two keys together, you can take a screen shot of the active windw.

  • Paste the image. There are many ways and places to paste the image you have just taken. Paste the image by right clicking on the destination and selecting paste or by using another keyboard shortcut Ctrl v ( Press and hold the Ctrl key and then hit the v key once while the cursor is blinking in the destination ).

If these images require no editing or cropping then simply pasting them into the message body of an email so that you can email them to support may be the best option. However if you are not going to be sending these screenshots immediately or if you need to send a sequence of them, then paste them into a MSword document or wordpad. Alternately you could paste the images into the paint program that comes standard with every windows operating system since 2000. This is definately the best choice if you will need to edit or crop the image. If you are going to be using paint just save the image as a .jpg or .png and then attach any of these saved images to an email to support at your convenience.
