What is the proper procedure to reboot or power cycle a modem and router?
Generally speaking, reboot or power cycle the modem first, then the router, and then the PC if necessary.
For identification purposes, the modem is the unit connected to the phone or cable line usually closest to the wall. The router is the unit closest to the PC in between the modem and the PC. If you have a modem router combo then just power cycle the unit and then the PC if necessary.
Because of the wide variety of modems, routers and modem/router combos available, these instructions may differ from manufacturer to manufacturer. If you are unclear as to the steps for your particular brand/model of modem, router, or combo unit, then consult the manufacturers specifications.
