Set Up A POP3 Account On iPhone

This guide will show you how to add a POP3 account on your iPhone.

1. From the Homescreen, select "Settings".

2. On the Settings page, scroll down to, and select, "Mail, Contacts, Calenders".

3. Select "Add Account".

4. Scroll to the bottom of the next list, and select "Other".

5. Select "Add Mail Account".

6. Fill out the fields on the "New Account" page. Enter your Email address in the "Email" field, and your Email password in the "Password" field. You can enter whatever you'd like in the "Name" and "Description" fields. Press "Next".

7. Select "POP". The first section will be automatically filled, so we just need to enter the server information. Under the Incoming Mail Server section, enter "pim.YOURDOMAIN" (i.e. if your domain is example.com you would enter "pim.example.com" for the "Host Name". The "User Name" is your Email address, and the "Password" is your Email password. The settings for the Outgoing Mail Server are identical to the Incoming settings. Click "Save"

8. You may have an error message come up saying that the iPhone "Cannot Connect Using SSL". Click "Yes" on this popup to continue.

If you get another error message stating that the account still cannot connect, select "Save". Then go back to the "Mail, Contacts, and Calanders" page. Under the Accounts section, select the newly created account (it will be called whatever you entered for the "Description" field).

9. After the POP3 account is set up (or if you had to "save" the account because it didn't connect), enter the account settings to continue the setup. First, let's modify the SMTP (Outgoing) server settings, under Outgiong Mail Server, so that it's not trying to use SSL, and make sure the Port is correct. Go back to the "Mail, Contact, Calenders" and select the account that was set up. Then scroll to the bottom and click the "SMTP" field.

10. In the SMTP server list, select the server that you entered for the account in the "Outgoing Mail Server", in the "Host Name" field.

11. In the Outgoing server settings, make sure "Use SSL" is set to "Off", and that the Server Port is set to use port "587". Click "Done" then click the back button when you're returned to the SMTP server list.

12. When you're back on the account settings page, click on "Advanced".

13. On the Advanced settings page, make sure "Use SSL" is set to "Off" and that the Server Port is set to use port "110" (which is the default port). Make sure that the "Delete from server" option is set to "When removed from Inbox"

14. Now that the account settings are set correctly, let's set the Fetch settings. If you opened your Mail application right now you may not download any of your email items, depending on what the default Fetch settings are.

Go back to the "Mail, Contacts, Calenders" page and click the "Fetch New Data" field.

The POP3 protocol does not support Push, so even if Push is set to "On" it will not be used.

You can set the "Automatic" setting to one of the four below. On the "Advanced" page you can set each account to use this automatic setting or set it to "Manual". Click on "Advanced" to change account specific Fetch settings.

15. On the "Advanced" page, select the account you would like to change settings for.

16. Select either "Fetch" or "Manual". Selecting "Fetch" will use the automatic Fetch settings that you set on the first page of the Fetch settings. Selecting "Manual" will check for updates when you use your Mail application.

Now that all of your settings are set to what you want, open your Mail application to download any mail items that are still on the server.
