2014.12.18 New Spam Rule for 3+ level domains

Spam is an ever-increasing problem.

At BitBlock, our goal is to maximize the effectiveness of Spam filtering while minimizing the chance of false positives. To that end, we are testing rules to allow people to filter email from domains 3+levels deep. For example:

someone@somewhere.example.com

The issue of course is that there are domains which are legitimately 3 levels deep. For example:

someone@example.co.uk

The reason these domains are an issue is likely related to wildcard DNS. Wildcard DNS allows people to set up their DNS to match and return an IP for any host name.

For example:

ANYRANDOMSTRING.example.com

The trouble comes when mail servers, which can be set to validate if a sender is legitimate by checking DNS, are asking a wildcard DNS server. The Spammer can then create endless random domains to send from, making the process of blacklisting known spammers harder.

If these rules prove helpful, we will put more effort into allowing for proper two level TLD's (which are likely legitimate senders at 3 levels, but illegitimate at 4+ levels).

At the moment, this option is somewhat experimental, and most suitable for people with a high spam volume and who are able to monitor their Junk folder.

In short...

If you have a big problem with Spam, and want to try a potential solution, and are sure you do NOT regularly receive mail from people with 3+ level domains, please contact support to have us enable the new filter on your account or for your entire domain.

Thank you.
